Paulo Govêa

A self-taught artist born in São Paulo in 1977, he builds his practice from an informal training deeply linked to the public space and the dynamics of direct circulation of art. From childhood, he was immersed in a context of production and exhibition outside institutions, accompanying his mother, the artist Maria do Carmo Govêa, in the sale and presentation of his paintings in Praça da República, a traditional meeting point for artists in the center of São Paulo. This early experience, marked by the weekly assembly of works, the direct relationship with the public, and the occupation of urban space as a legitimate place of exhibition, forms a structuring axis of his artistic practice.

As a child, she began her pictorial production alongside her mother, absorbing not only technical procedures but also an understanding of art as an active presence in the city and as a practice of exchange. In her pre-adolescence, this interest grew.
It intensifies from its social circle and the visual references of urban culture. Languages such as skateboarding, graffiti, and surfing, which were still very marginalized at the time and were then situated on the fringes of institutional circuits, begin to influence its aesthetics and its critical stance towards traditional models of artistic legitimation. The absence of a formal academic education in the arts becomes, in this context, a constitutive element of its language, based on autonomy, experimentation, and the construction of a visual vocabulary of its own.

His work gains visibility through urban interventions carried out in Florianópolis, in which a recurring triangular-headed character emerges, a figure that crosses different supports and scales. This character operates as a symbolic device that activates issues related to identity, anonymity, and displacement, establishing a direct dialogue with urban architecture and with the viewer outside the traditional exhibition space.

From these interventions, his work reaches other fields of circulation, including an experience in the world of advertising, when he was invited to create a national campaign for Banco do Brasil that was subsequently interrupted by the artist due to ethical issues. This brief passage reaffirms the decision for an independent artistic trajectory and reinforces the coherence between practice, discourse, and critical positioning.

Having been active professionally for about two decades, he develops a production with international circulation. In 2011, he held an artistic residency and exhibition at the Museum of Modern Art in Chiloé, Chile, marking the beginning of his institutional involvement outside Brazil. Since then, he has participated in individual and collective exhibitions in cities such as Barcelona, Berlin, Paris, and New York, as well as creating murals in countries such as Indonesia, Spain, Morocco, Uruguay, and the United States.

In Brazil, he stands out for participating in a collective exhibition that intervened in the windows of the Pinacoteca de São Paulo, in dialogue with the collective Crew 2000Família, as well as for creating a permanent mural at the Centro Integrado de Cultura (CIC) in Florianópolis. His most recent solo exhibition took place between 2023 and 2024 at the Consulate General of Brazil in New York. His work is included in private collections of international importance, including those of the Portuguese company EFCIS S.A. and the Spaniard Jordi Rubio Rocabert, founder of Montana Colors (MTN), reaffirming the inclusion of his work in institutional contexts and diverse collectors.
