This monotype is part of the “Memories of Water” series, which examines Juliana's contact with her Japanese ancestry and her trajectory as a Brazilian immigrant in Portuguese lands. The unknown quality of foreign territories is exposed through diffuse hues like dark spots. The shapes recall blurred memories that merge with the expectations that accompany the migration process. Juliana is capable of architecting new territories where the weight of ancestry and the novelty arising from new experiences are simultaneously present.

Juliana Matsumura is a Brazilian artist who currently lives and works in Lisbon. Drawing is central to her practice, using various tools such as engraving, photography and painting.
