Useless landscapes #30, 2023

Oil painting on paper, with frame (41.5 x 32.5 cm)

This painting is part of a special series within “Inútil Paisagem”, started during the Covid pandemic in 2021.

The exuberant beauty of the Portuguese coast is the surroundings, in the small village where the artist lives, in Cascais. The landscapes of the coast of Guincho and Cabo da Roca are present in many of his works. The memory of the gigantic ocean separating her from her affective roots present in Brazil, and the uncertainty of her return caused by the pandemic, added a layer of melancholy to the paintings, which, despite being exuberant, are always depopulated.

The series “Inútil Paisagem” was created in reference to the song of the same title by Antônio Carlos Jobim. The lyrics of the song mention this feeling of melancholy and loneliness that the landscape sometimes evokes.
