Nopal Cactus or Opuntia Robusta, is a species with several different cultivars that have the characteristics of flat cactus pads that can be eaten when the plant is young. Native to the southwestern regions of the United States and Mexico, nopal cactus is a common ingredient in Mexican cuisine, including jellies, candies and side dishes. It is also used to help harden plaster, as well as a medicinally with varied health benefits such as, antiviral properties, nerve cell damage prevention, high in antioxidants, and it is even found to help regulate blood sugar.
