FEIRA DA LADRA AND THE ECOLOGY OF PUBLIC SPACES IN THE URBAN LANDSCAPE

Our Fanzine Activism workshop, which took place in collaboration with Casa do Capitão in Lisbon, was divided into two parts, the first offering the historical context of fanzines, how they emerged, their uses and the relationship between fanzines and street fairs. The second part being the collective production of the fanzine. Each participant kept a copy of the final product.

The goal was to collectively create a fanzine about the Feira da Ladra, a well-known street fair that has taken place in Lisbon since the 1200's. Each participant brought their own reading of the theme, exploring their individual relationship with one of the oldest fairs in Europe.

Based on the idea of ​​the Feira da Ladra as an anthropological place, our workshop brought together different understandings about places where coexistences collide and social and economic exchanges occupy the same territory.

The relational nature of street fairs is responsible for making room for deep human connections, regardless of race, religion, age or creed. They are places where symbolic constructions are constantly erupting and the act of remaining in the same place for so long turns into political and social resistance.
